Migration in Colombia:
Causes, Effects and Return Strategies
Abstract
Migration seeks to improve the migrant’s standard of living and quality of life. But it causes socio-economic pressures in the cities receiving the migratory flows, which sometimes do not have the financial or spatial infrastructure to support the demographic increase. The principal purpose of this research is to understand how migration has been in Colombia and what proposals could be made to allow migrants to return to rural areas, improving the quality of life in these territories. Different motivations were found among migrants, the impacts they generate, and their situation at the end of the flow, concluding that income and economic and social opportunities in rural areas should be improved as part of an inclusive state policy.
