Architecture and the power of light
Abstract
The article deals with natural light topic, the symbolic and spatial importance in the architecture. A hybrid methodology was used in which applicable knowledge is generated from research on completed buildings. The analysed buildings were chosen according to four main factors: that were paradigmatic buildings, which had been visited in person, that were representative works of the time and natural light played a prominent role in them. The results are presented in four different sections: i) architectural light; ii) the symbolic role of light in architecture; iii) light as a challenge in the definition of architectural space; and iv) space, light and architecture. It is concluded that exposed examples represent different ways of handling light, and each one responds to the era, culture and media of the time.
