Bequeathing Budda and Requesting Buddha, Set Photography and Urban Transformations

Abstract

Wang Qingsong uses photographic language to focus on different social problems
related to the urban transformation that China has experienced in recent decades,
pointing out – in various of his artistic projects – the impact of the new urban plans
initiated after Deng Xiaoping’s economic reform, implemented since 1978. This paper analyzes several works of Wang Qingsong in which he reflects on the consequences of re-urbanization processes in large metropolises and the loss of traditional values. The reflections of the artist himself, collected in various interviews, and the interpretations of different art historians and curators, will be studied in order to delve into how these themes evolve in Wang Qingsong’s artistic career, from the late 1990s to the present.
